Whether you're setting up a brand new house or giving an old one a facelift, you'll want to give some attention to the kitchen's storage options. When determining where to put things like glasses and cookie sheets, you should take into account things like the size of the drawer or cabinet, its closeness to the stove or dishwasher, and how easy it is to get to.
We consulted custom cabinetry experts (and brothers) Tyler and Justin Sachs of New Jersey's Stonington Cabinetry and Designs to assist us choose the optimal configuration for a kitchen. When clients come to them with nothing more than an empty space, Tyler and Justin go to work designing a fully functioning (and stunningly beautiful) kitchen from the ground up.
We figured that, after years in the business and completing a large number of custom kitchens, they might have some great advice to share. It is important to start with the end in mind when designing a custom kitchen, as Tyler says. Put the purpose first and worry about the aesthetics afterwards. The point is that kitchens "should be designed to make cooking more pleasurable and efficient, so you can spend more time hanging out with our family and friends!"
Anyone may benefit from the Sachs brothers' advice, whether they're starting from scratch with the design of their ideal kitchen or are simply attempting to make the most of a small, inefficient rental kitchen. Check out the following for Tyler and Justin's top five recommendations on how to redesign your kitchen's layout and storage solutions like a pro.

Drawers (allowing for full visibility and quick access to their contents) are a better option for cookware that, honestly, doesn't stack well and can be clunky. This will be obvious to anybody who has had to get on their knees to rummage around for pots and pans in lower cabinets. Have to make do with the base units? If you want to add the practicality of drawers to your cabinets, you might try adding wire or wooden drawers like these.

Your KitchenAid mixer is lovely and deserves to be shown, but if you didn't want to, do you have a place to put it? If your current kitchen layout doesn't have room for bulky items like mixers, slow cookers, and blenders, your only real alternative is to permanently modify your cabinets by chopping away shelves. So remember this advice for the day you get to create your dream kitchen from scratch.

Large drawers are great for lower cabinets, but they can't be used there. Another common misconception is that the drawer located directly below the oven is used to house baking utensils. If you often use baking utensils like cookie sheets, muffin pans, and big platters, it is important to have some vertical storage near the range. Above a double oven tower or a huge pantry is where Tyler and his wife, who are both interior designers, recommends putting vertical storage.
